2010 Chistmas Letter
Dear People We Know,
Michelle has been bothering me for the last month to write this. I keep referring her to the Dear Abby column about how no one really likes getting these Christmas letters, but she won't let up. (We love your letters though.) But I'll make this as short and painless as possible.
Whitney is in first grade. This year she learned to read and that her father isn't always right. We got a note from her teacher a few months ago saying they were having a class party and that everyone could wear their pajamas to school to watch a movie. It sounded fishy to me. I remembered how when I was in kindergarten they announced it was going to be "baby day" the next day, and how I came to school with a diaper over my Tough Skins and a baby bottle, and how I was the only one in my class dressed like a baby. It took me years live that down, and it still gives me nightmares. With this experience in mind, I suggested that maybe Whitney should pass on this "pajama day" thing. When Michelle picked her up the next day she was nearly in tears, having been the only one in her class NOT in pajamas. She and Michelle let me have it when I got home from work. I might have deserved it, but who came up with "pajama day" anyway, and why couldn't they have thought of it when I was 15 years old, and would have really appreciated seeing some of my classmates in their nighties? It took several sincere apologies and a trip to Olive Garden to acquire forgiveness for this mortification.
Dane's started preschool. When we pick him up, his teacher is always holding him, although the other children are standing patiently in a line, waiting for their respective parents. Michelle asked her why she did this, supposing that maybe Dane was her favorite student and that she just couldn't stop hugging him because he was so adorable. "He keeps trying to run in the road," she said. If he wasn't my own son, this would probably make me think about natural selection.
And speaking of natural selection, last month Michelle hit a deer down in Kanab while driving us back from Arizona after Thanksgiving, totalling both our Honda CRV and the deer. I'm still suspicious that it was a conspiracy between her, the deer, and the local Honda dealership, so she could score an Odyssey minivan for Christmas. You win this round, Michelle.
And as for me - nothing exciting ever happens to me. But I'm comfortable in my boredom. Oh, and I turned 40, so I automatically became a little incontinent.
Merry Christmas,
K.C., Michelle, Whitney and Dane Woolf

Books I've Read - December Update
=========================================================
Books I Can Remember that I’ve Read (In no particular order)
I'm only counting text books if I read the entire thing.
I'm counting books that I read more than half of, but stopped because I couldn't stomach it (Lolita) or just because I hated it(Moby Dick). I'm not counting books that are mostly pictures (The Cat in the Hat), although they are still some of my favorite books. I'm counting books twice if I read them both in English and in Spanish. Also, I'm not counting the Bathroom Readers; mostly because I'm ashamed of how much time I spend on the pot. I've read almost all of them though.

TSA - Travelers Sexually Assaulted: Would TSA be a Good Medical Screening Test
(Rough Draft. I would appreciate any input.)
Would TSA be a good medical screening test?
As a family practice physician, every year I have a few patients ask me to order a whole body MRI, "just to make sure I don't have any cancer". I inform them that I don't recommend these tests for otherwise healthy people. This invariably leads to a long discussion about what makes a good screening test in medicine. Something every medical student learns is that a good screening test needs to be sensitive, specific, cost effective, safe, and widely available. A whole body MRI does not meet most of these criteria.
Being a frequent flier, I have recently been preoccupied with the increasingly invasive of "security" at our airports. This got me wondering - would the TSA's new security measures meet the criteria for a good medical screening test? If terrorism was a disease, and the new virtual strip searches and crotch grabbing pat-downs were a test for that disease, would any of the medical associations recommend it for universal screening. In order to determine this, let me briefly review what makes a good screening test.
The first attribute of a good screening test is that it has to be sensitive for what it is testing for. In other words, if I you have the disease a sensitive test will come out positive (not many false negatives). Although the new naked body scans and "third base pat-downs" may appear extremely sensitive, there is no objective evidence that they could have actually identified even the "underwear bomber". Also, given the fact that since it's inception 9 years ago, TSA has identified and prevented exactly zero terrorist attacks on planes, their tract record is 0% sensitivity.
Secondly, a screening test has to be specific. When a specific test is positive, the person really has the disease (not many false positives). So far, TSA has also been very unspecific. Every person they have frisked, illegally detained, or otherwise prevented from catching their flight HAS NOT been a terrorist. So they also have a 0% specificity in identifying terrorists.
Third, a good screening test should have a reasonable cost. For example, if every primary care doctor ordered a complete body MRI on every single one of their patients, it would bankrupt the health care system overnight (if Obamacare hadn't done that already). It would also take time and resources away from more efficient screening tests, as well as make MRIs less available for those who really need them). The annual cost of TSA screening is more than $200 million and they have yet to apprehend even one terrorist. Meanwhile, cargo, arguably a far more dangerous threat than passengers, is going completely unchecked. TSA = not cost effective.
Next, a good screening test has to be safe. Checking some one's cholesterol levels - safe. Doing open heart surgery on every person over 50 to feel their coronary arteries to see if they're clogged - not safe. I'm choosing not to discuss the safety of the high-tech strip search scans because I am personally not too worried about the small amounts of radiation used. But we must also consider emotional and physical discomfort when determining the safety of a test. More and more Americans are expressing their discomfort in knowing that in order to get on a plane, they may need to let a complete stranger see images of them naked, or have someone touch their private parts. Since TSA has failed to provide any demonstrable benefits of their security procedures, I believe their safety risks outweigh their benefits.
Lastly, a good screening test needs to be widely available. That's one thing TSA's got. Thanks to our over-zealous Department of Homeland Security, nudie and touchy-feely screening are more widely available than most of us want.
When I can't talk a patient out of getting a whole-body MRI, I at least warn them that they are much more likely to find benign lesions than anything life threatening. Unfortunately, you can't always tell if a lesion is benign from an MRI, and many people may need to go through painful, dangerous surgeries and procedures just to find out that what the radiologist saw was nothing they needed to worry about. So, what does TSA find in their extensive screening processes? Juliet Lupidos of Slate notes, "From Nov. 8 to Nov. 14... agents found six 'artfully concealed prohibited items' and 11 firearms at checkpoints, and they arrested six passengers after investigations of suspicious behavior or fraudulent travel documents. (Those figures are close to the weekly average.) It's not clear, however, whether any of these incidents represent attempted acts of terrorism or whether they were honest accidents. (Whoops, forgot I had that meat cleaver on me! Or, I had no idea flares weren't allowed!)" In other words, TSA is mostly finding a bunch of "benign lesions".
Some would argue that TSA really acts as a deterrent for terrorists, and that you can't really know how many terrorist attacks have been prevented by TSA looking down our underwear. But that reminds me of a Sesame Street skit I saw when I was 5, where Ernie was holding a banana in his ear, and Bert asked him, "Why is that banana in your ear?" "I use this banana to keep the alligators away." "Ernie, there are no alligators on Sesame Street." "Right! It's doing a good job, isn't it Bert!" Statistically, TSA can claim the same efficacy at stopping terrorists as holding a banana in your ear, and I'd rather hold a banana in my ear than have someone, who hasn't even bought me dinner, touch my penis.
Now back to the MRI scan. I order MRIs almost every day, but only for people who really need them, and only of the body part I'm interested in. I determine who and what to MRI by listening to patients' personal histories, family histories, and current complaints. I then di a careful, focused physical examination. From this information I cab determine who is most likely to benefit from an MRI. I guess you could call me a "medical profiler". It's too bad Homeland Security can't take a lesson from the medical field.

Book Review - The Early History of God: Yahweh and the Other Deities in Ancient Israel
In the book The Early History of God: Yahweh and the Other Deities in Ancient Israel, Mark S. Smith documents the early polytheism of the Israelites (not evolving into true monotheists until after the exilic period). From an LDS perspective, I respect the information and sources sited (mostly Biblical and Ugartic texts), but have different, less naturalistic, conclusions. Several years ago I concluded that much of the Old Testament was the story of God teaching the Jews, over several centuries, that He was the only God for this world, so as to eventually bless the world with ethical monotheism. This process went from polytheism, to henotheism (worshipping of a single god while accepting the existence or possible existence of other deities), to monolatrism ( the worship of one god who alone is worthy of worship, though other gods are believed to exist), and finally to true monotheism. (One could argue that Christianity regresses somewhat to polytheism with its non-biblical concept of the trinity, and that Mormonism is really monolatry rather than true monotheism, but I digress.)
This book, together with The Great Angel: A Study of Israel's Second God, by Margaret Barker, helped me understand that Mormonism may not only be a restoration of primitive Christianity, but also a restoration of primitive Yahwism. After all, if one concedes that at least some of the biblical references to the "Father God El" (or the plural, Elohim), the "great counsel in heaven", or even references to a female consort to El, as well as "the Great Angel", Yahweh, are actually revealed by God to prophets, and not just cultural mistakes or merely convergence from Canaanite religion, then the religion taught in the Bible as a whole is much more consistent with Mormonism than with "traditional" Christianity.
Overall, this is a great book if you are interested in the history of religion. Although it is not really light reading, I still got through about half of it on my flights to and from Arizona this last weekend. It made for an awkward conversation with the chatty guy sitting next to me. "What's that novel you're reading?" "Well, its not really a novel. It's a book about polytheism in ancient Israel and its evolution to monotheism." That shut him up.

Whitney the Evil Villian
The other day Whitney asked me to help her twist the apple peeler into Jasmin because, "she was bad". I asked her what she had done to deserve such sadistic punishment. "She kissed another guy, she drank some coffee, she smoked a cigarette, she kicked a guy in the penis and she escaped from jail." I don't know what they're teaching her in primary.

Books I've Read Update - The Once and Future King - T.H. White
The Once and Future King - T.H. White.
I only started reading this book because it was Professor X's favorite book, and it took me a while to get into it. But in the end it was a delight. It also made me want to watch The Holy Grail again. I wish they had burned Guenever and executed Lancelot though - I don't have much patience of sympathy for adulters. If they had been successful in eliminating that lot, and maybe slapping that pussy Mordred down a bit, we'd all still be dancing around Camalot today.
I'm counting the Sword and the Stone as a separtate book from The Once and Future King because White wrote it first and it was published by itself for years before he finished the rest of Arthurian story. Hey, it's just a list.
=========================================================

=========================================================

Excerpts from "The Enchanter" - an Anti-Mormon Comic Book
I went to the Fair Conference last week. It was great. I think I'll start going every year. They had a silent auction for some rare books. I bid on and won this anti-Mormon Comic book put out by Jack Chick. I may be breaking some copyright laws by reproducing some of the images here, but then Chick is plagiarizing John C Bennett et. al. and their National Enquirer version of Church History. I just thought this was dang funny.
You'll want to click on the pictures to enlarge them so you can read them better.
I love the adoring look on the young girls' faces and Emma's scowl.
At least these guys are equal opportunity haters. I guess we're as evil as Catholics, Buddhists, Hindus and Masons.
Satan: I hate these revivals. They must be killed! To do this I need a man born into the occult to be my prophet...Someone who can write books that will rival the Bible.
Demon: We have such a man, Master. His name is Joseph Smith. Bless and support him, and he will create a powerful religion.
Satan: Or course I will, you idiot!

Book Review: Odds Are You're going to be Exalted - Alonzo L Gaskill
Finally, someone wrote a book about what I've believed for a long time - that most people are going to be exalted and very few are going to hell. I agree with the author that "our God and Father is a successful parent, one who will save far more of his children than he will lose!" In fact, I think the only people who are going to hell are those who personally piss me off.
