I Read a Book Once - Joseph Smith's Polygamy: Toward a Better Understanding

Dr. Brian Hales is an anesthesiologist, here in Layton, Utah I think.  He has done more research than anyone else, ever, on Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy.  He has recently published 3 very large, hardcover volumes on the subject. I almost bought all 3 at the FAIR Mormon Conference earlier this month. But then I saw that his wife, Laura Hales had written a bit of summary book of all this research in less than 200 pages.  Good for her!  I bought that instead. (Here's a link to Sister Hale's talk at the FAIR Mormon conference.  It was also very good. http://www.fairmormon.org/perspectives/fair-conferences/2015-fairmormon-conference/joseph-smiths-polygamy-toward-a-better-understanding)

There wasn't anything in here that I hadn't already heard, but the details are very interesting.  The book also scrutinizes the historical sources for some of the most shocking and outlandish accusations against Joseph Smith's practice of polygamy.

Those who don't have a testimony of Joseph Smith or the restored gospel would probably read the information in this book and still think he was just a manipulative fraud. Those of us who do believe will read this same information and come to very different conclusions.

One of the most compelling arguments, I think, against the naturalistic motivation for Joseph's polygamy (that he was in in for the booty) is the paucity of children born to his 35 plural wives (with only one plural wive bearing him a child who lived to adulthood). Remember, this was the days before any reliable birth control. We know that Joseph was not sterile, having sired 11 children with Emma. We also know that most of Joseph's plural wives were fertile, having children with other husbands after, and some before, their marriages to Joseph. (If that doesn't convince you that Joseph Smith wasn't just a pious butt chaser, the photos of his plural wives at the back of the book will. Showing these pictures at a Sex Addicts Anonymous meeting would probably be curative to all present. They are about as sexy as Hillary Clinton in a thong bikini.)

This is worth reading if you, like most of us in the church, have been troubled by polygamy. It's still no fun to think about polygamy. And, similar to when I read the Old Testament straight through for the first time, it is difficult to find much in it that is faith promoting on the surface.  But if you believe, as I do, that polygamy was type of Abrahamic test for our progenitors in the church, you may come away with more empathy for those who practiced "the principle".  You may also find empathy for those who still aguish over it today.

That's 450 books total now.  If I pick up the pace I still might be on track to catch up to Art Garfunkel before I die. It looks like he's at 1218 now, and he's 73.  http://www.artgarfunkel.com/library/list34.html

========================================================================

Books I Can Remember that I’ve Read (In no particular order)
I'm only counting text books if I read the entire thing.
I'm counting books that I read more than half of, but stopped because I couldn't stomach it (Lolita) or just because I hated it(Moby Dick). I'm not counting books that are mostly pictures (The Cat in the Hat), although they are still some of my favorite books. I'm counting books twice if I read them both in English and in Spanish (or French).
