Book Review: Hawaii- A Novel - James A. Michener

I mostly read this book so I could annoy Michelle with Cliff Claven trivia about the islands when we go on vacation to Kawai next month. It was good; but why did Michener have to make his books so dang long? Actually, Michener is one of my guilty pleasures. I still remember how my favorite history teacher at MCC, Dr. Ohl, used to role his eyes whenever someone mentioned somthing they had read in a Michener novel. He wasn't a big fan.

Also, although I appreciate the ground work that the Calvanist Congregationalists layed for the Mormons in Hawaii, I'm glad that our first discussions aren't anything like the 19th century missionary Abner Hales' to the Alii Nui Malama:

"All men on earth are totally depraved. We abide in sin. Our natures are permeated and corrupted in all parts of our bing....we are all lost in sin!"

A child cried in one of the surrounding huts, and Malama asked, "Is that baby filled with sin, too?"

"From the moment that child was born..it was steeped in sin... That child is totally corrupt."

"But what will happen, Makua Hale, to that baby if it is not rescued from sin?"

"It will be plunged into fire everlasting."

"What will happen to me, Makua Hale, if I am not saved from sin?"

"You will be plunged into fire eerlasting."

"And all the good Hawaiians who died before you came here, Makua Hale? Are the living in the perpetual fire?"

"They died in sin, Malama. They now live in that fire."

"And that baby, if it dies tonight?"

It will live in the fire forever."

I'm glad my nephew, Elder Blaze Malan, who is serving a mission in Hawaii right now, doesn't have to teach that discussion. Say what you like about Mormons, at least we don't believe everyone who doesn't agree with us is going to hell. Maybe that's why another Hawaiian character, later in this novel, says this about the early missionaries:

"They came here to bring Congregationalism, but we despised their brand of Christianity. Now most us us are Catholics or Mormons."

I don't know what book I'm going to read next. Any suggestions?

Books I Can Remember that I’ve Read (In no particular order)

I'm only counting text books if I read the entire thing.
I'm counting books that I read more than half of but stopped because I couldn't stomach it (Lolita) or hated (Moby Dick). I'm not counting books that are mostly pictures (The Cat in the Hat) although they are still some of my favorite books. I'm counting books twice if I read them in English and in Spanish. Also, I have not counted all the Bathroom Readers, mostly because I'm ashamed of how much time I spend on the pot. I've read almost all of them though.
