Book Review: Odds Are You're going to be Exalted - Alonzo L Gaskill

Finally, someone wrote a book about what I've believed for a long time - that most people are going to be exalted and very few are going to hell. I agree with the author that "our God and Father is a successful parent, one who will save far more of his children than he will lose!" In fact, I think the only people who are going to hell are those who personally piss me off.

Books I Can Remember that I’ve Read (In no particular order)

I'm only counting text books if I read the entire thing.
I'm counting books that I read more than half of, but stopped because I couldn't stomach it (Lolita) or just because I hated it(Moby Dick). I'm not counting books that are mostly pictures (The Cat in the Hat), although they are still some of my favorite books. I'm counting books twice if I read them both in English and in Spanish. Also, I'm not counting the Bathroom Readers; mostly because I'm ashamed of how much time I spend on the pot. I've read almost all of them though.

Book Review - Native Son, by Richard Wright

I didn't like Bigger Thomas. From the beginning of this book to the end, I did not like him, and I thought it was appropriate when he was executed. I don't know if you are supposed to like Bigger, but if Richard Wright's purpose was to make the reader feel sympathy for a very unsympathetic character, he failed on me. Even the long oratory by his lawyer, about the social injustice Bigger faced, did not move me to empathy for him, after I had watched him show disrespect for his mother, commit petty theft, masturbate in public, kill a rich girl then mutilate and burn her body, attempt to profit from this killing, rape and murder his girlfriend, and show no remorse for any of these actions. Bigger Thomas was no Tom Robinson and Max is no Atticus Finch. I hope this doesn't mean I failed the racist test, but I can't help but believe in personal responsibility, even under very difficult circumstances. Bigger deserved to die, not because he was African American, but because he was a dirt bag. Regardless of the intended persuasions of this novel, it was brilliantly written and compelling to read. I wish I had read more of Richard Wright's stuff earlier, even if he was a communist.

Book Review: Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse

Book Review: Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse

Summary: A group of survivalists gather at a pre-planned retreat in northern Idaho to protect themselves after the complete socioeconomic collapse of the US. Conflicts first with lawless looters and then with the armies of an illegitimate, U.N.-supported, tyrannical government ensue.

It was hard for me to focus on the print in this book because I had to role my eyes so much. The only plausible part of the whole "crunch" scenario was the dollar crashing because of out of control government spending. I realized this book was pure right-wing fantasy when the survivalists capture and summarily execute two looting-communist-cannibals. Still, I was enjoying the book, mostly because of gun talk and the survivalist tips, until near the end. That's when the author had the bulk of Mormons in the west become collaborators with the UN "new world order" occupiers. "On the advice of the Mormon church hierarchy in Salt Lake City, most of the LDS wards in Utah and southern Idaho have signed on with the Federales' local autonomy scheme.....Now by this please don't think that I'm denigrating the LDS church. I'm not. It's just their current leadership that has caved in." Now, I'm used to reading novels where Mormons are the bad guys; from Zane Grey to Edward Abbey, Mormons are always good stock villains when your story takes place in the West. But this book started out pretty sympathetic to Mormons, with a kindly Mormon rancher taking in a couple of the main characters when one of them was injured, and noted that the Mormons were better prepared for the hard times because of their emphasis on food storage. But I guess in the end Mormon's (or at least their leaders) can't be trusted. Here's a tip for those who choose to portray Mormons in fiction while at the same time try to pander to them: Telling a Mormon that you don't have any problem with the his church but that its leaders suck is like telling him, "I don't have any problem with you family, but your mother's a whore." (I'll bet this author is buddies with some of the guys who were ex-communicated for being survivalist nut jobs. My wife knew some of them when she lived in Washington -she was engaged to one actually.)

I'm actually kind of embarrassed that this book was my #300 milestone. I tried to rush through Native Son so I'd finish it before this one, but I just couldn't do it.

I also hope that survivalist wackos don't read this post and put me on their hit list. I'm a libertarian, guys. I'm on your side. I just didn't like this book. Please don't kill me.

Book Review: Abraham in Egypt - Hugh Nibley

In Abraham in Egypt Hugh Nibley takes on the critics of the Book of Abraham, most of whom attack Joseph Smith's methodology and the lack of correlation between Joseph Smith Scrolls and what is recorded in the Pearl of Great Price, instead of closely examining the Book of Abraham itself. My favorite part of this book were the striking parallels between the Book of Abraham and apocryphal Abraham literature, to which Joseph Smith would never have had access. As with most of Hugh Nibley's works, most of the Egyptology and comparative mythology goes right over my head; but what was able to penetrate my skull was fascinating.

Just one more book before I reach the 300 milestone - still a long way from my 1000 books before I'm 50 goal.
